5 Fun Facts About the Harry Potter Movies

How many do you know? Behind-the-scenes magic you’ll want to know for the 25th anniversary

Over 200 outfits for Harry alone! The astonishing number of costumes that brought the films to life

ハリー、ロン、ハーマイオニー

In the films Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, numerous costumes were prepared for the main characters to support the staging of each scene. The number was staggering: protagonist Harry had about 245 outfits, Ron about 130, and Hermione about 55, totaling over 400 outfits for just the three of them.
In the films, costumes are not mere clothing; they are crucial elements reflecting the characters’ emotions, growth, seasons, and changes in their lives at Hogwarts. This overwhelming number of costumes helped create the realism and depth of the film’s world.

The symbol of Hogwarts—the Great Hall, built on a grand scale

大広間

The Great Hall of Hogwarts, a symbol of the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was one of the first sets built for the series. Approximately 30 staff members spent 18 weeks constructing it. The finished set was large enough to hold 22 double-decker London buses.
This overwhelming scale allowed it to function as a vividly real setting for Hogwarts life—from the Sorting Ceremony to dining scenes—becoming a central stage that underpinned the entire film’s world.

Ollivander’s Wand Shop is a wand specialty store located on Diagon Alley. It serves as the setting for the iconic scene where Harry is chosen by a wand that resonates with him, opening the door to his destiny as a wizard.
The vast stacks of wand boxes inside the shop were created through collaboration between the graphics department and the props department, who produced 17,000 wand boxes.

The Story’s Starting Point: “The Storage Room Under the Stairs”—Filming Techniques That Make the Most of the Space

The cupboard under the stairs at the Dursleys’ house (commonly known as Harry’s bedroom) was the small space where Harry spent his days until he left for Hogwarts, containing only a narrow bed and his few belongings. This space, crammed into a corner of the house, symbolized his lonely days while also serving as a striking location that starkly contrasts with the magical world that would later unfold.
The “cupboard under the stairs” was a very small set, so during filming, the crew had to install movable walls to secure space for the camera.

Why Does Hogwarts Castle Look Real? Behind the Scenes of Cinematic Beauty Supported by an Exquisite Model

Hogwarts Castle is the magnificent castle of the wizarding school that serves as the setting for the Harry Potter stories, an iconic structure with intricately connected towers and corridors. Supporting its grandeur was a 1/24 scale model of Hogwarts Castle created for the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Approximately 40 people spent around seven months constructing it, and the model was filmed alongside background visual effects to create the exterior of Hogwarts. Studio Tour Tokyo displays a faithful replica of the Hogwarts model created by the production design team for the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

One of the longest-standing sets in the Harry Potter film series is the Great Hall at Hogwarts. Built to coincide with the start of filming for the first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Friday, September 29, 2000), this set has become an iconic location symbolizing the Wizarding World.

At the Studio Tour Tokyo, you can see the “master craftsmanship” that preserved the Great Hall’s legacy up close. The vast space, the tables seating over 400 Hogwarts students, and the numerous decorations symbolizing the four houses. Torches adorning the walls bear the symbols of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff. Behind the long teachers’ table sits the “House Points Counter” filled with four-colored beads… This hourglass-style prop used tens of thousands of Indian beads for each, reportedly causing a bead shortage in the UK!
